things built up unintentionally. I am enchanted by examining these traces. Our lives are shaped by our environs and, in time, we too have altered them. The Dictionary of Geological Terms states that sediment is “solid fragmental material transported and deposited by wind, water, or ice... that forms in loose unconsolidated layers." Sediments of daily life come to rest in many of these scenes. Fragmental material forming loose layers also could describe how this body of photographs fits together; marks on personal spaces are echoed in landscapes. Wax dripping on a solitary candle matches the massive icicles of a frozen waterfall on an unusually cold Oregon day, a space heater glows like the sun, or a hand becomes a landscape. Like images from the early industrial period, when we began the habits that would most drastically change our environment, my images are made slowly.&nbsp; Photographs can appear instantaneous—a moment snatched out of the river of time, the essence of an event distilled into one frame and rising above the rest—but they are made up of rays of light that must collect on silver halide crystals. In places this temporal process becomes visible—the hazy shape of swaying foliage in a storm or swirling reflections gathering cloud-like on the surface of slow-moving water. like trying to speak underwater. True. Too, it is like floating with nothing to hold you in place. I’ve been thinking a lot about the things we drag with us through our lives, both emotionally and physically, across lands from place to place. Important things, yes, but hopelessly unimportant ones as well. My parents both grew up in New England. Together they got as far as Arizona before turning back to settle in Vermont. When I started driving from coast to coast, my mother asked me to take her back to the Southwest. She spoke of the smell of the desert at night, swamp coolers, and frying eggs on sidewalks. A decade later, we began preparing. I wanted to photograph her looking defiant in the glimmering light of the Southwest, to scatter some of my father’s ashes in Arizona, but the dusty orange box of ashes was lost in a move from one apartment to another. My mother had just gone on oxygen, and travel was hard. Instead, we drove along the southern highlands. West through the Monongahela, two generations, whizzing past Witches Hole, Haven, Never Sink, Stony Kill. Into the wild and wonderful state, Lewisburg, Lawrenceburg, Look Out. Mammoth Cave, soda straws, cave bacon, getting soft on hotel waffles. Back east through the birthplace of country music, down blue ridges, up great smokes, past Hungry Mother, Dry Fork, Greasy Ridge, Dripping Lick Creek, Dark Hollow Falls, Dismal Hollow, Crow Hollow, Possum Hollow, Dark Horse Lane, Horse Shoe Bend, Wiseman Branch. Just over a year after that journey, I was road-tripping again, driving both parents’ ashes, artifacts, and an excessive ephemera collection back to the West Coast. In rural Pennsylvania (the state that my grandparents came from before landing in the hills of Vermont), a chunk of ice clobbered my radiator, leaving me stranded at the Liberty Travel Plaza for five hours. Tethered to a lone outlet, behind the Big Buck Hunter (Safari edition), I considered what to rescue from my car before the tow truck came, watching my phone’s battery life hover around five percent, waiting for word from AAA. Eventually, I got going again, continued through the mountains of North Carolina, over highways to the desert of Arizona, then up to the Pacific Northwest. I made some stops to photograph, sometimes placing one of my mother’s belongings in the frame. I’d imagined I would scatter their ashes, have some kind of ceremony, maybe, pray, or take up writing poetry; I didn’t, though their ashes sat there buckled into the front seat. In Portland, I was living in a trailer without enough space to spread out and take stock. Most of what I had brought with me stayed packed tightly into several large Tupperware bins for another year. I went back to cleaning houses. It is a strange thing to be a house cleaner—an outsider let into a private space. Dusting around a precarious shelf, I set it wavering, toppling a cat urn off the unstable shrine. It broke— superficially—ashes staying intact, thank goodness. Cardboard, on the other hand, does not shatter. Another client, down the street, felt calmed by the sight of vacuum tracks on her carpet after a long day at work. After vacuuming each rug, I would go over it an extra time, walking backward, leaving neat impressions in stripes or grids. These days I live in Texas, the jumbo state, and have a little more space of my own. The ephemera I’ve carted from state to state swirls across my living room floor, reminiscent of unpredictable weather patterns my father made diagrams of or the beginnings of a jigsaw puzzle taking shape on a tabletop. Pieces surface for varying amounts of time before stacks accumulate on top of them. A notebook full of equations briefly breaks into understandable language, “It fails It still won’t go deeper than line 107—Martha says get milk.” Scrap paper reminders from watching the landscape unfurl out the passenger window back in the Appalachians, “Black cows, red clay, grey smokestacks, lead kindly light.” I line up photographs: cars, cats, cloudy horizons, tufts of cigarette smoke. the hunt for land to work, live on, and one day own. His search for his forever farm has had him traversing the country – from Oregon to Maine, Pennsylvania, California, Utah, back to Oregon. Living in a variety of situations – bus, cabin, van, condemned house, tent, trailer, barn. When I met him, he had one dog (Sugar) but along the way gained a herding dog, guardian dogs, a horse, rabbits, chickens, ducks, goats, and many sheep, he now has over 500 animals. Though he hasn't yet found his forever land, he has struck out on his own (as many of us dream of doing) and is raising his animals on leased land in southern Oregon. He calls his farm Sugarfield. It is a small operation, and he does most everything himself or with the occasional help of friends and neighbors.Farmers use the land for an essential purpose – to grow or raise food. Something all humans must have, but our level of connectedness with this reality varies greatly. Pony has chosen to hang his livelihood and everyday existence on this most basic need. Through his story, I'm able to explore ideas of small farming, raising and eating animals, rural living, remoteness, and community, and the idea of owning one's own plot of land. Butte and the surrounding area, like many towns, embody its history.Opportunity, Wisdom, Anaconda; Clear Grit, Quartz, Agate, Granite, Platinum, Diamond, Aluminum, Iron, Mercury, Steele, Silver, and Copper Streets; Oro Fino Gulch, Silver Bow, Mill, Mine, and Lost Creeks; Orphan Girl, Orphan Boy, and Neversweat mines; the Pit.The minerals found underneath Butte hill brought wealth, a boomtown grew atop 10,000 miles of tunnels. With this mineral wealth came economic opportunity and a big city. But also dangerous working conditions, intense labor rights struggles with hard-won victories, and environmental destruction (the area is now the largest superfund site in the US). The Berkley pit, a mile long and half a mile wide open-pit mine filled to 900 feet with water loaded with heavy metals, dominates the landscape in much of town. A constant alert sounds at the pit to keep birds from landing in the deathly water — a reminder of the catastrophic results industry can enact on nature. Most animals sense the danger of getting close. While, in other parts of town, deer graze in yards most evenings beneath nearby mountains that form a backdrop for everything you see.I found both the land and buildings of Butte to be equally beautiful. As a Resident Artist at the Imagine Butte Resource Center during April of 2018, I was one of the last people to explore and document the artifacts left in the soon to be redone upper floors. The Phoenix building got its name in 1907 when it 'rose from ashes' at a site of a previous fire. It has had many uses and inhabitants over the years, and on the upper floors, evidence of them is everywhere. I sorted, sifted through and photographed ephemera strewn about, tiptoed over papers and pigeons, and delighted in dusty forgotten treasure trash that remained from old businesses. When it got too dim upstairs, I would hop in my car and 'chase the light' to one of the many overlooks above Butte.We live our lives in places where others have dwelt, and worked, and dreamt, as we walk our own paths every day we burry traces of the former. But, in some places, the past is bold; it looms large and is not easily covered over. myself, Helen Jones, and Sarah LaPonte one late fall in Braddock, Pennsylvania. The photos were shot on dollar store disposables and on medium to large format cameras that were jammed into carry-ons and brought with sagging shoulders all the way from the west coast.When living in a house without heat, without doorknobs, without much insulation or electricity to speak of there is this sweet spot in mid-November where it is consistently cold enough that you can buy yogurt with reckless abandon but it is still temperate enough that the water is icy but won’t freeze all the way through. That year in Braddock far surpassed the convenient kind of cold and everything straight up froze. Dog water and chicken broth, yes, but also bananas, blocks of cheese, canned goods, bread, tortillas, hot toddies that weren't poured stiff enough, all the beer, toothpaste, telephones, lotion, and face astringent; there were ice slicks by the front door and in future kitchen and the pee jars were full and solid as yellow brick.I didn’t remain in Braddock, but Sarah did. I've returned when I could, always with a sense of nostalgia but eager to see what changes have occurred in the house, and to take some new photographs there in the shadow of the steel mill. Smith's book M Train. The line comes as she is describing walking into her New York home – drafts of manuscripts spread over the floor, used turpentine and linseed oil scent the air, half-eaten deli sandwiches, cups of coffee, and souvenirs of the past fill the apartment. Those words struck me with a sense of comfort, nostalgia, and absurdity – the same feeling I have when looking back on my photographs of home spaces. "Here is joy and neglect." I jotted down the line, stuck it over my desk, and read it almost daily.I grew up in a small town in the green mountains of Vermont, in an apartment with my mother, and the ghost of my father. There was a room filled with his belongings that changed very little over the two decades after he died until my mother moved. It was a palimpsest, a half-readable history in belongings – old books and notes, surfaces and textures, treasures to be found. This room led to my fascination with the way people interact with personal spaces, the way they arrange objects in their homes, the things that they save, and the unintentional marks they leave behind. My mother struggles with agoraphobia; this has also informed my perception of home spaces. The emotional difference between indoors and the outside environment is central to my sensibility.Wallpaper that has been spackled over and over where a favored chair hits; the familiar view out a window that has been blocked out by cardboard replacing broken glass pane; piles of plastic cups that are accumulating dust but seem to belong.
